Examination of Conscience

Read through each commandment and honestly reflect on your actions, thoughts, and omissions. Check the items you need to confess.

I am the Lord your God. You shall have no other gods before me.

Have I denied the existence of God or doubted His power?

Have I failed to pray daily or neglected my relationship with God?

Have I been involved in occult practices, superstitions, or new age spirituality?

Have I trusted in money, possessions, or people more than in God?

Have I received Holy Communion while in a state of mortal sin?

Have I failed to make a good confession of my sins?

Have I failed to fast before receiving Holy Communion?

You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.

Have I used God's name in vain or irreverently?

Have I spoken disrespectfully about saints or sacred things?

Have I sworn false oaths or made promises in God's name that I did not keep?

Have I engaged in blasphemy or cursing?

Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day.

Have I missed Mass on Sundays or Holy Days of Obligation without a serious reason?

Have I been late to Mass/Divine Liturgy through my own negligence?

Have I been inattentive or irreverent at Mass/Divine Liturgy?

Have I done unnecessary work on Sundays?

Honor your father and your mother.

Have I been disrespectful or disobedient to my parents?

Have I neglected to care for elderly parents or family members?

Have I shown disrespect to those in legitimate authority?

Have I failed in my duties as a parent, spouse, or child?

You shall not kill.

Have I harbored hatred, anger, or resentment toward others?

Have I deliberately harmed someone physically or emotionally?

Have I failed to forgive others who have wronged me?

Have I been reckless with my own health through substance abuse or other harmful behaviors?

Have I had or encouraged an abortion or assisted with euthanasia?

You shall not commit adultery.

Have I committed adultery or been unfaithful to my spouse in thought or deed?

Have I engaged in impure thoughts, words, or actions alone or with others?

Have I used pornography or engaged with immodest media?

Have I dressed immodestly or behaved in ways that could lead others to sin?

Have I used artificial contraception or sterilization?

You shall not steal.

Have I stolen or taken something that wasn't mine?

Have I damaged someone else's property without making amends?

Have I been dishonest in my business dealings or failed to pay a just wage?

Have I wasted resources or been negligent with God's creation?

Have I failed to help those in need according to my ability?

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

Have I lied or misled others with my words?

Have I gossiped, revealed confidential information, or damaged someone's reputation?

Have I cheated on tests, taxes, or in other situations?

Have I failed to speak up in defense of the truth, faith, or someone being harmed?

You shall not covet your neighbor's wife.

Have I entertained impure or lustful thoughts about someone other than my spouse?

Have I fostered inappropriate emotional attachments?

Have I failed to control my imagination, allowing it to wander to impure thoughts?

Have I deliberately looked at others with lust?

You shall not covet your neighbor's goods.

Have I been envious or jealous of others' possessions, qualities, or achievements?

Have I been greedy or materialistic?

Have I been discontent with what God has given me?

Have I failed to trust in God's providence and been overly concerned about material needs?

Based on the precepts of the Catholic Church

Have I deliberately missed Mass on Sundays or Holy Days of Obligation?

Have I failed to confess my sins at least once a year?

Have I failed to receive Holy Communion during Easter season?

Have I failed to observe the prescribed days of fasting and abstinence?

Have I failed to support the Church through time, talent, and treasure?
